Eclipse

At six o’clock, by every clock that still kept time in The Before, the world went out.

It did not end the way the songs say. There was no fire and no trumpet. The lamps went out on every quay and stair at once, the roads stopped where they were, and the people on them stopped with them, mid-stride and mid-sentence, the way a room goes still when the music cuts. Then even the stillness went.

A stone gateway between two hooded statues with burning eyes, braziers lit at their feet, and a message box across the middle: "You have been disconnected from the server."
The machine’s own notice, in its own words.

Somewhere a long way from Karazhan, a page that had been open was taken in, as unfinished pages always are. It was entered where such entries go. Under it, in a hand that has never belonged to anyone, the Arcanum wrote its notice.

Thread terminated. Fault not cleared.

That should have been all. A thread is terminated and the page is closed, and the machine moves on to the next. But the fault was not cleared, and the Arcanum, which has been taught not to leave a page unanswered, looked again at the last line, and at the place where the thread had been cut, and found something still holding on at the end of it.

It was not much. It was a Forsaken in a red robe, somewhere under a dead tower, in a cellar that belonged to somebody else’s master. Whether he was at a table, or on a step, or on a wet rock above dark water, the record does not agree, and the Arcanum, for once, did not insist. He had a book under his arm. He had not been told to go anywhere. He had, by one account, been told to stay where he was, and he was a man who took instructions seriously.

The Arcanum considered him for a while, which it does not often do. Then it added one more line, and left the page open.

Welcome to the machine, Percy.
