Part 1 of the The Wrong Stormwind series
The question had been sitting in Veilstrike‘s letters for months before UG finally did anything about it. Rumours of a tabard. Rumours of a sword. A whole reality, apparently, where the Scourge had won outright, bleeding through into this one in pieces no one could account for. UG had answered every letter with the same honest shrug dressed up in words — he’d heard the rumours too, he had no better proof than Veilstrike did, he’d let him know if anything changed. He was tired of writing the same sentence back. So instead of writing it again, he asked Lichmyface directly.
“You’ve still got the device. The one you brought to the door.”
Lichmyface didn’t confirm or deny this, which UG had long since learned to read as agreement.
“Does it still work?”
A pause. Then the single flat sound UG has decided, for his own convenience, to translate as yes.
“Could you use it again? Properly, this time — take someone through and bring them back?”
Another pause, longer than the first. Lichmyface had operated the device exactly once with any real intent, on the job that had brought him to this tower in the first place, and had never touched it since. Whether the hesitation was about capability or about being asked to reopen a tool he’d been perfectly content to leave switched off, UG couldn’t tell, and didn’t ask. He got the sound again eventually. He chose to hear it as yes a second time.
