Part 4 of the The Wrong Stormwind series
“Sold, that one,” the owner said, before UG had gotten as far as asking the price. “Couple of weeks back. Collector.”
He remembered the buyer well enough to give a real description — tall, human, long-legged, dressed head to toe in leather that had clearly cost more than the sword itself. There’d been a woman with him too, in black patent leather with a collar that left no doubt what kind of evening the two of them had planned for later, paying in cash and asking no questions about where the sword had actually come from.
UG relayed all of this to Blondage that evening with the delight of a man who’s just learned something reassuring about the multiverse. Apparently it isn’t only this Azeroth. Whatever’s out there, wherever the golden portals actually lead, some things hold steady across every version of it — people falling in love, people hoarding old weapons for reasons they can’t fully explain, and evidently, somewhere, a taste for black patent leather. Blondage found this the most satisfying part of the whole trip by a comfortable margin.
He wrote to Veilstrike that night with everything, the tabard and sword finally real and sitting in his own bag as proof rather than rumour, and the sword-that-wasn’t-what-they’d-been-looking-for as a strange footnote he couldn’t quite let go of — a Frostmourne, whole, in a reality where the Lich King had apparently never been beaten, already sold on to someone whose face UG never saw and whose actual knowledge of what they’d bought there was no way for anyone to check. It wasn’t the answer to anything Veilstrike had specifically asked. It was, UG wrote, further proof that whatever Morgrave had dragged through with him was only one thread in something a good deal bigger than either of them had first assumed.
Lichmyface brought them both home the following morning, precise about the return crossing in a way he hadn’t managed on the way out, landing them back in the tower’s own cellar within a few feet of where they’d left. UG has since told the story to anyone who’ll listen as a successful trip with one loose end still hanging. Blondage tells it as a good few days away that happened to include some very reassuring news. Neither version is wrong.
